Over 100 eminent citizens yesterday in a joint statement denounced the killings in the ongoing anti-narcotics drive across the country.
“More than 150 people have been killed across the country by the Rapid Action Battalion and police without any trial since the middle of May and the number is still rising. We are strongly condemning such planned killings,” said the statement.
Among the 121 signatories to the statement are politicians, academics, writers, lawyers and cultural activists.
Issuing the statement under the banner of National Committee against Fascism and Capitalism, they demanded an end to such killings and transparent trial into those incidents immediately.
“In the name of announcing zero tolerance against crimes, the state has commuted the convicted criminal and assisted him to leave the country… took no legal steps against the law enforcers who were involved in drug dealing,” it said.
The eminent personalities demanded announcement of a list along with full name and address of each person killed in the anti-drug drive and ensuring all the democratic rights of citizens.
They also called for trial of all the law enforcers who threatened, harassed and killed people.
Prof Emeritus Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Jahangirnagar University professors Anu Muhammad, Naseem Aktar Hussain, Dhaka University professor Gitiara Nasreen, associate professors Samina Luthfa, Fahmidul Haq, Robaet Ferdous, Tanzimuddin Khan, Badruddin Umar, president of Jatiya Mukti Council, Khalekuzzaman, general secretary of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, Sheikh Mohammad Shahidulla, Jafrullah Chowdhury, BD Rahmatullah, writers Omar Tarek Chowdhury, Syed Abul Kalam, Nur Mohammad, Rafiq Kaisar and Rehnuma Ahmed signed the statement, among others.
