Gang posing as EC officials collect fingerprints in Naogaon

A group of people impersonating Election Commission officials have collected fingerprints from people at places in Naogan, causing security threat to the biometric security features.

They have convinced the local people easily as the commission is currently collecting fingerprints for smart national identification cards.

Talking to New Age, commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed claimed that he was not aware of the incident and none had the authority to collect fingerprint other than the commission.

The police and local administration said that two unidentified men have collected fingerprints from villagers at Hazipur of Badalgachhi upazila in Naogaon in June 26-28 and assured them of distribution of smart national identification cards.
They also collected fingerprints and personal information from the villagers and took photos of them, the villagers told local officials.

The two strangers left the village after one of the victims, Hafizur Rahman, informed upazila election officer Shafiuddin Shiekh.

‘The two had left the place before I could reach them,’ said Shafiuddin.

He said that the local administration recently made announcements through public address system at the upazila urging people not to provide any information to unidentified people.
‘On June 30, we received similar allegation from another place and we failed to nab them too,’ said Shafiuddin.

On July 11, one of the victims filed a general diary with Badalgachhi police station in this regard.

Police are, however, yet to identify the two involved in the incident.

About 1,000 people have been cheated, Bilashbari union parishad membr Yaad Ali said.

Badalgachhi police station officer-in-charge Jalal Uddin said they were yet to arrest any of the suspects.
