Case against Khaleda: UK MP Carlile to brief media in Delhi July 13

British MP and lawyer Alex Carlile will visit New Delhi on July 13 and address the media on the cases and imprisonment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Carlile would address a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club at 1:00pm on that day explaining the court cases against Khaleda, Club President S Venkatanarayan said.

Observers here note that the British member of the House of the Lords is seeking to mobilise public opinion on the issue of Khaleda's cases ahead of the next parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, slated for late December.

Some lawyers of Khaleda from Bangladesh are also expected to join the press conference.

The activities of the ruling Awami League and BNP in New Delhi in the run up to the national elections are being keenly watched by political circles.

Political and diplomatic sources in the Indian capital said the BNP was very keen on Khaleda's release from jail and participation in the polls campaign.

A three-member BNP delegation last month visited New Delhi and interacted with leading think-tanks here. The team explained the political situation and the upcoming elections in Bangladesh.

A 22-member AL delegation, led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, had visited New Delhi in April and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prior to that, another AL team, led by former Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni, had come here to attend the plenary session of the India's main opposition party Congress and met its top leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Political Adviser HT Imam will travel to New Delhi on July 5 on a three-day visit during which he will have a meeting with senior BJP leader Vinay Saharsabuddhe, also the president of Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Imam is also expected to meet Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and National Security Adviser Ajit Dobhal before having interactions with the senior fellows of think-tank Observer Research Foundation on July 7.
