As part of its countrywide scheduled programme, Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists observed token hunger strike in front of Press Club in the capital demanding unconditional release of their party chairperson Khaleda Zia who was jailed for five years in a graft case last Thursday.
Several hundred leaders and activists, including party standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, joined the programme started around 10:00am amid tight security by police.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir concluded the hunger strike around 1:00pm, which was supposed to continue till 4:00pm, calling to continue movement for releasing Khaleda Zia from Jail and holding a fair election. The programme was concluded early as the authorities requested, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
The hunger strike was the last day programme of three-day agitations of the opposition party for immediate unconditional release of Khaleda and cancellation of sentence against her elder son Tarique Rahman now in London.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the BNP leaders and activists staged a sit-in programme in front of the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the city.
A special judge’s court in Dhaka on Thursday handed Khaleda five years’ jail in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and soon after delivering the judgment she was led away to Old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road.
