BRAC founder and chairperson Fazle Hasan Abed on Sunday said that Bangladesh had failed to invest in education, giving it one of the lowest budgetary allocations, while initiatives had been insufficient to enhance quality.
He was giving the keynote speech on ‘assembly on higher education in Bangladesh’ at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the Dhaka University.
The event was organised by DU international relations and history departments in association with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Bangladesh, said a
press release.
Pointing that Bangladesh allotted only 2 per cent of its GDP in education sector, Abed suggested that special attention should be given to higher education through incorporating inclusive equitable learning and information and communication technology to achieve a double digit growth and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Abed also suggested opening professional faculty development centres, online courses and a national teaching service corp for improvement in education sector.
He also stressed on incorporating ethics and values while educational institutions practice greater accountability and autonomy.
‘There should be student loan schemes available through tripartite agreements of banks, educational institutions and students while international organisations should provide concessional loans for developing the education sector,’ Abed added.
Abed said funding should be increased in research and development units.
DU international relations professor Imtiaz Ahmed gave the welcome address while FES Bangladesh resident representative Franziska Korn and German ambassador to Bangladesh Thomas Prinz also spoke.
