TIB alleges rampant electoral violation today

Independent watchdog Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) in its latest report  today alleged rampant violation of electoral code in the country ahead of the election.

It conveyed grave concerns over Election Commission’s inaction over the violation, attacks, intimidation and harassment on opposition activists in a statement.

TIB said the commission might lose its trust if it moves to curb live cast from voting centres, mobile phone and restrict the media in carrying out its responsibilities.

It called upon the commission to be active in upholding its constitutional duty and carry it with the virtues of self-respect and righteousness.

“Since the start of electioneering, opposition activists have been attacked, sued, intimidated and harassed,” TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said.

“The commission’s lax in addressing these issues are concerning. Not only the opposition activists are facing challenges from the ruling party, but also the police,” he said.

“Media reports indicate that opposition men are facing discrimination from police,” he said.
