Anti-narcotics drive: 8 killed in ‘gunfights’ in six districts

Amid an ongoing crackdown on narcotics, eight alleged drug peddlers were killed in one night in separate “gunfights” in different districts of the country.

Three suspected drug traders were killed in Jessore district, while one each died in Chuadanga, Rajshahi, Narsingdi, Jhenidah and Tangail.

In Jhenidah, an alleged drug trader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rab at the junction of three roads at Narendrapur village under Kaliganj upazila of the district, reports our correspondent.

The deceased was identified as Sabdul Mondol, 42, son of Mohammad Ali Mondol of Narendrapur village under the upazila, our Jhenidah correspondent reports quoting Jhenidah Rab camp Commander Golam Morshed.

Rab recovered a nine MM pistol, two rounds of bullets, 100 bottles of phensydil, 150 pieces of Yaba and a helmet from the spot.

Abdul Mannan, a man from the same village said he was working on his vegetable plot with Sabdul on Sunday around 5:00pm when some plain cloth men picked up Sabdul from the plot, reports our correspondent.

In Jessore, three ‘drug peddlers’ were killed in two different areas in the town, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police AKM Ajmal Huda.

The drug traders were killed in separate gunfights between two groups of drug traders in Khejur Bagan area in Nawab Ali of Sheikhati and Kholadanga area in the early hours today, the official said.

Police recovered 500 pieces of Yaba, two pistols and cartridges from the spot.

In Chuadanga, Janab Ali, 32, a ‘drug trader’ was killed in a gunfight with police at Uthli village under Jibonnagar upazila of the district.

Seeing a group of seven to eight people at Synnashitola field, a patrol team of police led by Sub-Inspector Milon Ullah stopped his vehicle on Uthli- Synnashitola road at about 3:30am, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting officer-In-Charge (OC) of Jibonnagar police station Mahmud Rahman.

The gathering of people opened fire on the policemen when the law enforcers asked what they were doing, triggering a gunfight in retaliation, the OC said.

In Rajshahi, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rab-5 around midnight.

Huge amounts of Yaba, arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot, according to a text message sent to media by Rab.

In Narsingdi, a “drug-peddler” accused in multiple criminal cases and a top criminal was killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rab-11, according to a text message sent to media by Rab.

Large amounts of Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.

According to UNB, in Tangail, a suspected drug trader Abul Kalam Azad Khan, 42, son of late Abdur Rahman Khan, a resident of Purbo Pakutia of Ghatail upazila, and also accused in five cases, was killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rapid Action battalion in a brickfield area of Deula Bari around 12:00am.
