Bangladesh NHRC does not endorse extrajudicial killing

The National Human Right Commission does not endorse any extrajudicial killing, the commission said in a statement on Tuesday.
It expressed concern over such killings in ‘gunfight’ between ‘drug peddlers’ and law enforcement agencies at places across the country.

The rights body came up with the statement as such killings of suspected drug peddlers in reported gunfights across the country continued and 11 people were killed in such incidents on Tuesday.

‘The commission does not support any extrajudicial killings and the commission expresses concern over the incident,’ the statement read.

In the statement, commission chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque said that the drug peddlers should be brought to justice to ensure exemplary punishment. He also stated that the law enforcers should carry out the operations keeping human rights in mind and the country’s existing laws so that no innocent person was affected.

At least 33 people were killed during anti-drug drives since May 15.
