Khulna election a model of ‘peaceful rigging’: Sujan

Local government expert Tofail Ahmed on Tuesday said recently held Khulna city election was a model of ‘peaceful rigging’.
Addressing a post-election press conference of Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik, a civil rights body, at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity he said that people observed that local politicians and law enforcement agencies played the role of Election Commission about taking decision on the election.

He said the election observers were no more independent as some laws were implemented to restrict their jobs.

Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said the EC failed in Khulna as the commission did not address the allegations about affidavits of the candidates.

EC appointed a senior officer above the returning officer without proper investigation following complaints from the ruling Awami League, he said.
He also said that mass arrest of opposition leaders and activists by the cops tarnished the image of EC.

He said the EC also failed to ensure an electoral environment in Khulna.
Columnist Syed Abul Maksud said Khulna city election made a new record in the election’s history as a Class II boy also cast vote in this election where the ruling party candidate bagged the mayoral post.

EC failed to show the courage that was needed to conduct the constitutional duty in Khulna, he said adding that people lost their confidence on the EC.

Among others, Sujan president M Hafizuddin Khan and central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarkar also speak at the news conference.

On May 15, AL candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque was elected Khulna city mayor defeating opposition BNP candidate Nazurl Islam Manju.
