Hasina isn’t worthy of receiving Global Women's Leadership Award — Senator Lee Rhiannon

Why is the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is  getting the Global Women’s Leadership Award who  has agreed to lowering the age girls for marriege? Asked  Lee Rhiannon, Green  Senator  for New  South Wales, Australia.

It is surprising  to see that the Foreign Minister of Australia hosting  a Prime Minister from a country also committed to the cause of women like the former who has made a breach of the cause by agreeing to marriage of girls under 18 in her country. Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage in the world.

A 2012 UNICEF Report noted that two out of three marriages in Bangladesh involve child marriages.

PM Hasina undermined  the initiative  by agreeing to a law that permits girls under age 18 to allow marriages  under “special circumstances”. Human Rights Watch reports that there is no age limit on the marriage of girls under this exception.
