Nazrul Islam Monju, BNP mayoral aspirant in the upcoming Khulna City Corporation polls, suspended his election campaign protesting “arrests” of his party activists.
Around 19 leaders and activists of Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and other pro-BNP bodies were allegedly arrested in Khulna city between last night and this morning, our district correspondent reports quoting Monju as saying.
Monju, who started his election campaign yesterday morning and continued till night amid torrential rain, halted his election campaign from 9:00am today, the official said.
He alleged that the law enforcers were trying to terrorise BNP leaders and activists to keep them away from the election campaign. “They’re also raiding the houses of our party leaders and activists and harassing them.”
The BNP mayoral candidate also claimed that Awami League men are violating the election code of conduct but the Election Commission does not pay heed to his allegation in this regard.
He also demanded the authorities concerned create a level-playing field and stop intimidating his party men.
The elections to Khulna City Corporation will be held on May 15.
