11 injured as AL activists attack BNP activists during Eid greetings



At least 11 BNP leaders and activists were injured as pro-Awami League activists attacked them at Mehendiganj upazila town in Barisal while the district (north) BNP president Mesbahuddin Farhad, also former lawmaker, went there to exchange Eid greetings on Thursday.

Six of the injured – Bangladesh Nationalist Party district unit Nazrul Islam, Charekria union unit general secretary Kanan Talukder, Jangalia union unit president Mizan Gazi and general secretary Sabuj Mia, Mehendiganj town Juba Dal joint-convener Amjad Poddar and Gobindapur union Juba Dal president Mizan Majhi – were admitted to different hospitals.

Local people and BNP leaders alleged that the local activists of Awami League, Swechchhasebok League and Sramik League led by Mehendiganj upazila AL vice-president Khorshed Alam Bhulu launched the attacks on BNP leaders and activists in Patarhat Madrasah road, Hogla auto-rickshaw stand, and steamer ghat areas in phases between noon and 1:30pm when Mesbahuddin went there to exchange Eid greetings.

Mesbahuddin said that at least 11 BNP leaders and activists were injured in the attacks. Upazila AL vice-president Khorshed Alam Bulu could not be reached for comments.

Mehendiganj police station officer-in-charge Shahin Khan told New Age that they were not informed about any such incident and none lodge any complaint with the police station.
