Over 400 activists held on Sunday - BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday claimed that the law enforcing agencies arrested more than 400 leaders and activists of the party as part of the government’s bid to foil a public meeting of BNP in Dhaka on Sunday.

The leaders and activists were arrested on their way to and from the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, said BNP’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing.

He alleged that the ruling party activists with the help of police stopped public transports and restrained people from joining BNP meeting at different places in and around the Dhaka city.

He said leaders and activists from Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensing, Narayanganj, Kishoreganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur and Brahmanbaria, including the party’s national executive committee member Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan, central leader Mojibur Rahman, Dhaka north city unit organising secretary Sohel Rahman were arrested.

In response to a comment of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader that the gathering at BNP’s rally indicated a decline in its popularity, Rizvi said the government had started shivering seeing the huge gathering at the public meeting.

He expressed concern over sending BNP’s finance affairs secretary Khaled Mahbub Shyamal to jail on Sunday after he appeared before a Brahmanbaria court.
