Religious minorities in Bangladesh to hold demo in Dhaka on Sept 28 over next election

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council on Sunday announced that it would hold a rally in the capital on September 28 over the next parliamentary election.

The council’s general secretary, Rana Dasgupta, while addressing a news conference at the National Press Club, said, ‘The national coordination committee comprising 21 religious minority organisations have arranged the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. The minorities will voice their concerns over the state, the government, political parties and their alliance. National Professor Anisuzzaman will grace the rally as the chief guest.’

He said they were very much concerned over the security of the religious and ethnic minorities of the country ahead of 11th national election likely to be held in December.

Both the local and general elections that were held in the country after 1990 did not become the matter of celebration, but misery for the minorities, said Rana.

As the election was nearing, there was a rising concern, anxiety and a sense of insecurity among the minority groups, he added.

Around 1,004 incidents of violence on religious and ethnic minorities took place in 2017 while the figure was 1,471 in the previous year, he also said.
