AL turns a blind eye to rapists: CPB women cell

Communist Party of Bangladesh’s women cell members on Friday slammed the ruling Awami League for not bringing alleged rapists to book in fear of losing its support.

Addressing a rally in front of National Press Club in the capital, they said women and girls were not safe in the patriarchal society and the government had totally failed to secure their normal life, even at their home.

They said that widespread violence against women and girls was the festering wound of the consumerist society driven by capitalism.

Commenting that political elites were enjoying culture of impunity, CPB central committee member Maksuda Akhter Laily said people, being deprived of justice, had lost their respect for the country’s judicial system.

Labour leader Joly Talukder said that capitalism-friendly lady prime minister failed to protect the country’s women and girls from being abused every day.

Urging women to be united for a change, Joly said armies of female workers in the ready-made garments sector were raging counterattack on the sexual oppressors in their workplaces.

Chief guest of the rally, CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim said the country was freed through a bloody liberation war so that people would not have to face Pakistani-style oppressive rule any more.

‘But unfortunately, all the incumbent governments since independence helped oppressive practices include abuse of women by political elites to take roots,’ he said.

He slammed shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, the de facto leader of transport owners and workers, for his silence against the transport staff who continued to abuse women passengers on moving vehicles.

Selim urged women to form ‘brigade’ at every locality to encounter rapists.

Chaired by CPB women cell convener Lakshmi Chakrabartee, the rally was also addressed by Professor AN Rasheda, Luna Noor and Lucky Akhter.
