Liberal Democratic Party president Oli Ahmed on Tuesday demanded the government come up with a specific declaration for creating a level-playing field for all parties ahead of the next general election.
‘As the election gets closer, I demand the government create a level-playing field so that all parties can hold meetings at their desired venues. The government should make a specific announcement in this regard,’ he said.
The LDP president made the demand at a press conference at the National Press Club in the capital.
He alleged that the ruling party has long been carrying out meetings and election campaign across the country keeping BNP, LDP and all other parties restricted to indoor meetings.
Oli observed that the Election Commission cannot exert its constitutional power as it has become a government-backed institution.
He urged the government to engage in talks with political parties for holding the next general election in credible and peaceful manner.
Mentioning that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been kept in jail unfairly, the LDP chief said no step is taken for ensuring the better treatment for her. ‘She can at least be sent to United Hospital for treatment.’
The LDP chief also demanded the government immediate release of Khaleda Zia from jail and show proper respect for her as she is not only a former prime minister but also the wife of a freedom fighter.
Describing the student movement demanding reform of quota system, as justified one, he said the government should reform quota system instead of revoking it for building a merit-based administration.
