Brandishing firearms: 2 ex-BCL leaders charged with attempted murder

Police today pressed attempted murder charges against two expelled Chhatra League leaders in a case filed over brandishing firearms during a hawker eviction drive in Dhaka's Gulistan on October 27, 2016.

Sub-inspector of Shabagh Police Station Ikramul Islam, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court against BCL Dhaka south and Wari thana units general secretaries Md Sabbir Hossain and Md Ashiqur Rahman.

The charge sheet will be placed before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi today for its acceptance.

On October 27, 2016, several Bangla dailies published photographs showing Sabbir and Ashiqur brandishing firearms during a clash between hawkers and an eviction team of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The clash broke out after the DSCC team launched the drive to remove illegal makeshift shops from pavements and the underpass market area in Gulistan.

The two BCL leaders, who were expelled from the party following the incident, were denied bail and sent to jail by a magistrate court on February 9 last year after they surrendered before a Dhaka court in the case. Now, they are out of jail on bail.
